Kidney Stones Natural Treatment Without Surgery: Ways To Remove, Pass Kidney Stones Fast At Home

The presence of kidney stones, otherwise called nephrolithiasis, is a condition that is responsible for more than 1 million visits to the hospital in the United States. Based on statistics, it is estimated that about 5% of the human population will develop nephrolithiasis in their lifetime.

Several medical procedures can be used to get rid of kidney stones from the kidney. A major technique is lithotripsy which involves using ultrasonic shock waves to crush the kidney stones that were previously unable to pass through the ureter.

Regardless, the treatment method for kidney stones depends largely on the type of kidney stone. Other treatment methods such as the use of medication are also effective. However, in this article, we shall be considering natural methods of treating kidney stones without the need for surgery, and can be done at home.

What are kidney Stones?

A kidney stone is a small, hard mass of crystalline mineral residing in the kidney or in the urinary tract. This size of the stone can be as small as a grain of sand, or can be as large as a pebble of stone.

Kidney stones are formed when minerals in urine or the walls of the kidney aggregate and form a single mass. Passing these stones through urine can be painful as they block the ureter.

Types of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are classified on the type of mineral crystals that form the stones. Based on this method of classification, the following are the major types of nephrolithiasis:

  1. Calcium stones: About 80% of all kidney stone cases are of this type, making it the most common form of the condition. Calcium stones or calcium oxalate are mainly caused by the consumption of foods high in oxalate. Examples of such oxalate-rich foods are chocolate, spinach, and beets. Contrary to what you may think, eating more calcium-rich foods can help in preventing calcium stones.
  2. Struvite: Struvite is a form of kidney stone that mostly affects women, particularly those with UTIs (urinary tract infections). A preventative measure for struvite is to treat the UTI.
  3. Cystine stones: This is the least common type of kidney stones, accounting for less than 2% of all kidney stones cases. Cystine is a naturally occurring compound in the body; people with cystine stones experience a leaking of cystine from the kidneys into the urine.
  4. Uric acid: Uric acid is a component of urine; however, when this acid becomes concentrated in the urine, it may lead to kidney stones. Kidney stones of this type affect men more than women. The presence of an underlying medical condition like gout may also increase the risk of developing uric acid.

Causes Of kidney Stones

Generally, the most common cause of kidney stones is attributed to a lack of water in the body. This is because a dehydrated system is unable to dilute the uric acid in urine, which eventually leads to kidney stones.

With that said, there are various factors that increase the risk of developing kidney stones. Some of these risk factors are:

  • Obesity
  • Dietary factors like eating too much salty foods
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Gout
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Genetics
  • Racial background
  • IBD or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Hypercalciuria or high calcium content in the urine
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Certain medications such as diuretics, which increase the flow of urine in the body

Signs and symptoms of kidney stones

Most times, kidney stones may not show any sign or symptom until they get into the ureter. Some of the common symptoms of kidney stones, when present, include:

  • Frequent urination with pain
  • Blood in the urine or hematuria
  • Discolored urine or urine with an acrid odor
  • Passing out small amounts of urine at a time
  • Fever and chills
  • Painful feeling in the back, abdomen, or side
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
