Neem leaves are used for culinary purposes in India, where it is found in abundance. But, beyond its culinary uses, neem leaves and other neem products have been used for their medicinal properties.
Neem, known in India as the Indian Lilac, finds usage in the treatment of various health conditions such as in reducing inflammation and in treating wounds.
In this article, we shall take a look at the use of the leaves and oil of the neem plant in birth control, as well as for other medicinal purposes.
What is neem?
Neem is a large evergreen tree native to tropical and subtropical regions like the East Indies or the Indian subcontinent. Neem belongs to the Meliceae family of trees that include many timber and ornamental trees.
Neem, which is also known by its botanical name Azadirachta indica, is considered as one of a group of herbal plants that have various medicinal properties.? Based on available research results and studies, there have not been any apparent side effects of using neem as a natural contraceptive. The most that happens with using neem is a reduction in sperm motility in men. However, you need to be cautious of overuse as it can affect the liver.
Another advantage of using natural contraceptives and spermicides like neem is the fact that they are not as uncomfortable as artificial contraceptives.
Using neem oil as a contraceptive lubricant for women

More recent studies also suggest that neem oil destroys spermatozoa in the vagina within 30 seconds of contact, and can last for up to five hours.
Neem oil for protection against STDs
Aside from the lubricating action of neem oil in women, it can also be used to prevent the transmission of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases). This is due mainly in part to the antimicrobial properties of neem. More studies are still being conducted on the effectiveness of neem in fighting different STDs, including HIV-1.
Neem leaf as a contraceptive for men
Experiments conducted on male monkeys have found that ingestion of neem leaf extracts can be used to lower fertility without lowering sperm production or sexual desire.
NOTE: Neem oil should not be ingested, especially by children, because the effects of internal use of the liquid have not been clarified yet.
Medicinal benefits of neem
We have considered the use of neem leaves and oil in preventing conception in women, now, we shall take a brief look at some other uses of neem:
- Acne treatment: Neem leaves can be used in treating various skin conditions, including acne. All you need to do is to pour some neem leaves in boiling water and allow to steep. Filter the liquid and store in a container. Then, every time you are to have your bath, add some of the neem water to our bathing water. Alternatively, you can try crushing the neem leaves and mixing with a little water to make a paste, and then apply on the acne.

- For insect bites: Massaging insect-bitten skin with neem leaves extract is a natural way of treating such problems. This benefit is attribute to the fact that neeem leaves contain anticoagulants. In addition, neem leaves contain azadirachtin, which is regarded as a natural insect repellant.
- Scabies: If you have scabies and you feel that your medications are harsh on your skin, you can try neem oil. Besides being an effective natural remedy for scabies, neem oil is mild on the skin. Just mix the neem oil with some turmeric powder to make a paste, and then, apply to the skin and hair.
